Ball Fractions: How Much of the Object Ball to Hit

Almost every miss in carom billiards traces back to one decision made a split second before the cue moves: how much of the object ball to hit. French players call it the quantité de bille; in Spain it is the heart of bola y efecto. In English we talk about ball fractions — full, three-quarter, half, quarter or fine. Learn to see and feel these five contact amounts and you own the most transferable skill in the game, because every aiming system you will ever use is built on top of it.

What a ball fraction is

A ball fraction describes how much of the object ball your cue ball covers at the moment of contact, seen from behind the shot. A full ball means the cue ball arrives dead-centre and the object ball is driven straight ahead. A half ball means the edge of your cue ball is aimed at the centre of the object ball — you cover exactly half of it. Thinner hits (quarter, fine) clip less and less of the ball, sending it off at a sharper angle while your cue ball keeps more of its own speed. The fraction is not about force; it is purely about where the two balls touch.

The five fractions and the cut angle each produces

Because the object ball always leaves along the line joining the two ball centres at contact, each fraction produces a predictable cut angle — how far the object ball deviates from the cue ball's original path. These are the reference values every player should memorise; the half-ball 30 degrees in particular is the anchor of countless diamond systems:

Two things make this table powerful. First, the angles are not evenly spaced: going from full to half changes the line by 30 degrees, but the last sliver from quarter to fine adds almost as much again — thin hits are far more sensitive to a small aiming error, which is why fine cuts feel so unforgiving. Second, the half-ball hit at roughly 30 degrees is the value the half-ball reference method and most diamond systems are calibrated around.

How to see the fraction at the table

The most reliable way to aim a fraction is the ghost-ball picture: imagine the cue ball frozen at the exact spot it must occupy to send the object ball where you want, then aim your real cue ball's centre at that ghost. A half-ball hit, for instance, lines the edge of the cue ball up with the centre of the object ball. With practice you stop calculating and simply recognise the overlap — three-quarter, half, quarter — the way you recognise a familiar face. Fractions give you the natural angle — the line the balls take with a centre-ball, spin-free stroke. The moment you add side english (effet), two effects shift the result: throw, where friction nudges the object ball slightly off the pure fraction line, and the curve that spin adds to the cue ball after the cushions. A calibration drill

Place the object ball mid-table and the cue ball two diamonds away on a straight line. Play a series of shots aiming successively full, three-quarter, half, quarter and fine, with a pure centre-ball stroke each time, and watch where the object ball crosses the far rail. Mark the five landing zones. Within one session you will have a personal, repeatable map of your own fractions — and you will discover which one you habitually misjudge (for most players it is the three-quarter, which quietly drifts toward half). Re-run the drill whenever the table or cloth changes; the angles are geometry, but how cleanly you deliver them depends on the day, which is part of good shot selection.

From fractions to systems

Diamond systems, the half-ball reference, ticky and bricole routes — none of them work if the underlying contact is a guess. That is why coaches in every tradition teach the ball fraction first and the numbers second.
