You arrive at an unfamiliar club fifteen minutes before your match. The balls feel slightly sluggish on the warm-up roll. The cushions return with a little more kick than your home table. If you step to the line and play your memorised system numbers unchanged, you will spray shots for the first half of the match — and by the time you have adapted, the damage is done.
Reading a table is a learnable skill. It has nothing to do with superstition or “feel” in the vague sense. It is a structured 15-minute diagnostic that gives you the two or three data points needed to shift your system numbers correctly before the first ball is struck in anger. Reading Table Speed
Table speed describes how far a cue ball travels for a given stroke weight — equivalently, how much energy the cloth absorbs from the ball on each contact. A fast table (low friction) lets the ball travel farther and maintain spin longer. A slow table (high friction) kills energy quickly, shortens the path, and dampens spin.
The rolling test
The most reliable quick test requires no target ball and no system: place the cue ball on the head spot and roll it toward the far cushion with a relaxed, medium stroke — the kind you would use for a gentle approach shot. On a standard-speed Simonis 300 carom table in good condition, a medium stroke will drive the ball to the far cushion and return it to roughly the centre of the table or just past it. If the ball dies well short of centre on the return, the cloth is slow. If it rolls back to near the head cushion, the cloth is fast.
Refine the test by rolling diagonally across the table. Cloth wear is directional: a napped cloth has a “grain” running from the roll end toward the play end, and a ball rolled with the grain travels 8–12% farther than one rolled against it. If you notice a significant difference between your diagonal rolls in opposite directions, the table has directional bias. This is common on heavily used club tables. Visual assessment
Before touching the balls, look at the cloth surface in raking light (from the side). Fresh Simonis 300 shows a smooth, almost suede-like surface with no visible pile. Worn cloth shows compressed, matted areas, especially in the central diamond zone and the high-traffic head and foot spots. A cloth that looks glassy in the centre but napped at the rails has inconsistent speed across zones — the ball will slow more sharply when it reaches the cushion return zone, affecting how far it travels on second and third rails.
Speed categories and their Corner-5 implications
For practical purposes, classify the table into three speed bands relative to your home table:
- Slow (−1 band): ball returns noticeably short of centre on the rolling test; you need to add stroke weight throughout the match. Corner-5 entry numbers shift outward by approximately 0.5 to 1.0 diamond to compensate for the shorter cue-ball travel on the first rail.
- Standard (baseline): ball returns to centre; your memorised numbers apply as-is. Confirm with two or three calibration shots in the warm-up.
- Fast (+1 band): ball returns well past centre or reaches the head cushion; subtract stroke weight. Corner-5 numbers shift inward by 0.5 to 1.0 diamond — the ball overshoots its intended landing zone if you play your standard entry.
The “0.5 per speed band” rule of thumb is a starting point, not a fixed formula. Calibrate it with real shots during warm-up (see the warm-up protocol section below).
Cloth Types and How They Play
Not all billiard cloth is the same, and knowing which surface you are playing on sets your expectations before the first roll.
Simonis 300 — the tournament standard
Simonis 300 (also listed as Simonis 860 in some older catalogues, though the two are now distinct products) is the near-universal cloth on serious three-cushion tables worldwide. It is a worsted wool blend — the fibres are combed parallel before weaving, which removes the nap and produces a smooth, fast, directionally neutral surface. The UMB and most federation-level events specify Simonis 300 carom grade. Speed: fast. Spin retention: high — because the surface is smooth, applied english survives multiple cushion contacts with relatively little decay. New Simonis 300 plays approximately 10–15% faster than Simonis 300 with 200 or more hours of play on it.
Simonis 860 — standard pool/snooker grade
Simonis 860 is the high-end option for pool tables — it is napped (directional pile), which creates more friction and slows the ball compared with the 300 series. You will occasionally encounter it on carom tables in clubs that share equipment between disciplines. If you are used to 300 and find yourself on 860, expect the ball to travel 10–20% shorter for the same stroke, and expect english to die faster after the second cushion. Playing the same Corner-5 numbers on 860 as on 300 will leave you consistently short of position.
Hainsworth and Strachan
Hainsworth (UK) and Strachan (UK) are high-quality worsted cloths used primarily in the snooker world but occasionally found on continental carom tables. They are slower than Simonis 300 and have more directional character. If you encounter them on a carom table, treat them as a slow Simonis 860: add one full speed band to your stroke weight and expect english to fade earlier on deep-cushion returns.
Cloth age and directional nap
Even on the correct Simonis 300, cloth age matters. A new cloth has tight, upright fibres and plays fast. After 300–500 hours of play the fibres compress, especially in the high-traffic zones, and the table slows by a perceptible band. After 1,000+ hours the cloth typically develops visible worn channels in the centre where most back-angle and cross shots travel. Play in those channels is faster than on the intact cloth to either side, creating inconsistency within a single shot’s path.
Directional nap (the slight lay of the fibres from the roll end toward the foot) is present even on fresh Simonis 300, though it is subtle. It becomes more pronounced as the cloth ages. A ball rolling with the nap travels perceptibly farther than one rolling against it; a spinning ball will also find its english amplified or dampened slightly depending on whether the spin direction aligns with or fights the nap. Cushion Response
The cushion is half the geometry of every shot. A ball that enters a rail at a known angle should exit at a predictable angle — but only if the cushion responds consistently. Cushion response is the variable players underestimate most.
Cushion profiles: K-55 and carom
Cushions are shaped by their cross-section profile. The two relevant profiles for carom billiards are:
- K-55: the international tournament standard, defined by a nose height of 63.5% of the ball diameter above the slate. K-55 cushions have a moderate radius that produces a clean, predictable angle return for a wide range of entry angles. UMB rules require K-55 profile on all sanctioned event tables.
- Carom profile (K-66 or similar): a slightly higher nose, producing a flatter angle return — the ball comes off with a more horizontal trajectory and less vertical component. Some club tables use carom-specific profiles that deviate slightly from K-55. The practical effect is that high-angle entry shots (sharp corner approaches) return at a shallower exit angle than K-55 would produce.
Pool cushion profiles (K-66 pool, sometimes installed on cheaply converted tables) are noticeably softer with a lower nose height and will deflect the cue ball unpredictably on the third-cushion contacts typical in three-cushion play. Do not attempt to apply diamond-system numbers on a pool-profiled cushion — they will not hold.
Dead cushions vs. lively cushions
A dead cushion has lost its elasticity. The rubber has hardened with age (especially in cold, dry environments) and absorbs energy instead of returning it. A lively cushion returns almost the full input energy and exits the ball at the predicted angle. How to test:
- Roll the cue ball firmly into a short cushion at approximately 45 degrees from about 50 cm.
- Observe the exit angle and the speed of the return. A lively cushion returns the ball at close to 45 degrees with minimal speed loss. A dead cushion returns the ball at a shallower angle (the “squirt” effect) with noticeably less speed — sometimes dramatically so on the third contact.
- Repeat on all four cushions. It is common for one or two cushions on a club table to be deader than the others, particularly the two short rails if the table is positioned near a cold wall.
Artemis cushions
Artemis cushions (manufactured in the Czech Republic) are common on mid-range European carom tables. They are a synthetic rubber formulation designed to remain elastic over a wider temperature range than natural gum rubber. Artemis cushions at room temperature play comparably to lively natural-rubber cushions, but they are notably more consistent across the table — variation between the four rails is minimal. If you are used to natural-rubber cushions and move to an Artemis-equipped table, expect slightly more uniform response on all four rails rather than the one-or-two-dead-rails pattern of older tables.
Temperature and cushion warming
This is the most overlooked variable in club play. Rubber cushions, both natural and synthetic, are stiffer at lower temperatures. A table that has been sitting in a cold room (below 18°C / 64°F) will have noticeably dead cushions for the first 30–45 minutes of play. As the balls strike the cushions and friction warms the rubber, response improves. The practical consequence: if you play an early-morning match in a cold hall, the cushions in the first game will play dead compared with the second game. Plan your opening strategy accordingly — favour shots that rely on fewer cushion contacts (back-angle, short cross) in the cold opening frames, and recalibrate your multi-rail system numbers after two or three innings when the cushions have warmed.
Adjusting System Numbers
Once you have assessed speed and cushion response, you have enough data to make systematic adjustments. The goal is not to rebuild your game from scratch — it is to apply a simple offset to your existing memorised numbers so they produce the same physical result on this table as they do on your home table.
The Corner-5 offset model
The Corner-5 system assigns a cue-ball entry number (1–5 on the short rail) and a target number (1–5 on the long rail) to produce a predictable three-cushion path. The numbers are calibrated for a standard-speed Simonis 300 table with lively K-55 cushions at room temperature. Any deviation from that baseline shifts the numbers.
A practical offset table for common deviations:

The ghost-ball mental model
Experienced players adapting to a new table use a concept that might be called the “ghost ball”: instead of thinking “my Corner-5 number 3 shot,” they visualise where the cue ball actually ended up on their first two warm-up attempts and mentally relocate their target number to that observed landing zone. If the ball consistently arrives 0.7 diamonds short of where they expected on the second rail, they shift their target number inward by 0.5–1.0 and play from there.
This is not guesswork — it is calibration. The geometric relationship between entry angle and exit angle is fixed by physics. What changes is the speed at which the ball completes the path. Once you have observed the actual landing offset twice, you have enough information to apply it consistently for the rest of the session. English decay adjustment
Spin (english) decays at a rate proportional to the number of cushion contacts and the cloth friction. On a fast, smooth cloth (new Simonis 300), applied english survives to the third and even fourth contact in a noticeable way — the ball curves slightly on the final approach to the second object ball. On a worn or slow cloth, spin dies after the second contact, and you are playing a nearly spinless trajectory from the third rail onward. Adjust: on slow tables, apply slightly more english to compensate for earlier decay; on fast tables, consider reducing english to prevent the cue ball from tracking wider than intended on the third contact.
The 15-Minute Warm-Up Protocol
Fifteen minutes of structured warm-up on an unfamiliar table gives you the data to compete from the first inning. Here is the protocol used by experienced club players and coaches.
Minutes 0–5: free rolling and speed assessment
- Execute the rolling test described above (cue ball from head spot, medium stroke, note return distance). Repeat diagonally in both directions to check for nap bias.
- Roll the cue ball into each of the four cushions individually from 30 cm at approximately 45 degrees. Note the exit angle and the ball’s speed after contact. This gives you your cushion response baseline for all four rails.
- Assign a speed band (slow/standard/fast) and a cushion-response rating (dead/normal/lively) for each rail. Write it on the back of your scorecard if you need to — you will refer to it during the match.
Minutes 5–10: Corner-5 calibration shots
Place the object balls at their standard positions and run three Corner-5 shots at entry positions 3, 5, and 7 (these span the range from wide-open to tight-angle entries and give you a read across the full entry spectrum). For each shot:
- Play your standard home-table number.
- Observe where the cue ball actually arrives on the second rail relative to your target.
- Note the offset (short, on-target, or long).
If all three shots are consistently short by approximately the same amount, apply the corresponding inward offset to your entry number for the session. If they are scattered — some short, some long — the table has a zone-based inconsistency (common on worn cloth) and you need to track offsets per entry zone separately. Minutes 10–15: natural-angle calibration
Spend the final five minutes on natural-angle shots (no english, straight follow-through), running a cross shot and a back-angle shot from two or three positions each. Natural-angle shots depend only on entry angle and speed, with no english variable. If these are also landing off-target, the deviation is purely a speed issue — adjust your overall stroke weight. If natural-angle shots land correctly but spin shots do not, the issue is english decay rate: adjust english application (see above) but leave stroke weight alone.
At the end of 15 minutes you should have: a speed band classification, a per-rail cushion rating, and a Corner-5 offset number. These three data points are enough to play confidently from the first inning. Competition Table Strategies
Club competition and organised tournament play add a psychological layer to the purely technical problem of table adaptation. The players who score best on unfamiliar tables are not the ones with the highest averages on their home table — they are the ones who have built a systematic adaptation routine and execute it every time, regardless of what the table does to their expectations.
Arrive early
The single most effective competition strategy is simply arriving early enough to complete the full warm-up protocol before your match is called. At most club events, 20–25 minutes of pre-match table access is available if you ask and arrive in time. Players who warm up for 5 minutes because they arrived late consistently perform below their practice average in the first half of matches on unfamiliar tables. If you track your scoring average across venues, you will often find that your away average lags your home average by 0.050–0.100 points — a gap that proper table adaptation closes almost entirely. Most missed points in the first three innings of an away match are not system errors — they are speed-calibration errors that a proper warm-up would have eliminated.
Between-session recalibration
In multi-session tournaments (morning and afternoon blocks), the table conditions change between sessions as the room warms up and the cloth absorbs moisture from the players and spectators. If you played a morning session on a slightly slow, cold table and return for an afternoon session, expect the table to play one band faster and the cushions to be livelier. Top players re-run the three Corner-5 calibration shots at the start of each session even if they played the same table an hour earlier. This is not paranoia — it is professional consistency. The five minutes spent recalibrating will save you three or four mis-aimed shots in the opening innings.
Keeping a table notebook
If you play the same club circuit regularly, a small notebook with per-venue table notes is a genuine competitive advantage. Record: cloth type and approximate age (new vs. worn), speed band relative to your home table, which rails run dead, and the Corner-5 offset that worked last time. A well-maintained notebook means you arrive at a familiar circuit venue already knowing your starting offset — the warm-up becomes a confirmation rather than a discovery, and you can spend those 15 minutes on shot-specific preparation instead.
Note the date of each entry and update it when you return. Club tables re-clothe on cycles of roughly 1,000–2,000 hours (often once every one to two years at a busy club). A notebook entry more than a year old may be describing a cloth that no longer exists. Treat stale notes as a starting hypothesis, not a guaranteed offset.
The psychological challenge
Unfamiliar tables trigger what coaches describe as “phantom performance anxiety”: the player begins to doubt their fundamentals rather than correctly attributing missed shots to an uncalibrated offset. The best defence is a pre-committed rule: for the first three innings on a new table, every missed point is assumed to be a speed or cushion offset, not a stroke error. Adjust the number, not the stroke. This rule prevents the cascade of mechanical tinkering that ruins many away-match performances — the player starts adjusting their bridge, their follow-through, their stance, all in response to a problem that was purely a system-number mismatch.
